Who we are

History of the Ministry

  • 1994 - LHM Area Counsellor for Africa and Middle East who reside in Nairobi, Kenya decide to send the "This is the Life" programs to KBC TV station.
  • 1995- The responses are good and they decide to ask the church to give them a liason officer who will be following up on these responses.
    1. Rev J. Dachi from the communication department of the Lutheran church is hired on contract to fill this position as coordinator of Nairobi project office.
  • June 1997 - The LHM make a decision to give a six months trial period after which they would either upgrade or close the nairobi centre.
    1. John J Maina Kamau is hired as country manager for the given period from July 1997.
  • Appointment of the first board of LHM Kenya headed by Mr. J. Mosha. with representation from both Lutheran synods in Kenya.
  • The board endorses the name NURU as the name of the local chapter of LHM.
  • After six months the office picks up well with the launch of Bible Correspondence Courses and volunteer based programs.
  • Feb 1998 - The office is formally launched in a big celebration together with the dedication of Uhuru Highway Lutheran church with John as its first director. It was attended by Al Waldron, the vice president of the International Lutheran Layman's League and his wife.
  • Launch of various programs follow over time. They include:
    1. Training in evangelism and counselling
    2. Tracts
    3. Drama ministry
    4. Brass band
    5. Asian outreach ministry
    6. BCC and outreach to the Blind and Albinos
    7. Hospital visitaion program
    8. Outreach to kenyan prisons
  • 2003 - 2006 April - Paul Mbugua Kamau takes over as director.
    Kids ministry is launched during this time.
  • 2006 April - John Maina Kamau is again asked to come back by LHM to take the office of director once more.
